Declan Bonner’s Donegal Minors showed all the hallmarks of a well oiled winning machine as they saw off a second half fightback from Derry to book their place in the semi-finals of the Ulster Championship with a 1-10 to 0-08 win.
The Inishowen quartet of Danny Monagle, Tony McClenaghan, Caolan McGonagle and John Campbell all showed up well and there were encouraging signs all over the park as Donegal raced into a six point half time lead.
The Oak Leafers, back boned by the St Pat’s Maghera side who reached a Hogan Cup Final last month, burst out of the blocks for the start of the second half however and but for two brilliant point blank saves from Danny Rodgers in the Donegal goal they could have led the game heading into the final quarter.
Donegal found an extra gear in the last five minites however to get the insurance scores they needed to decide an intriguing contest and on the evidence of Sunday the Ulster League winners are now well placed to claim their first provincial championship since 2006.
