The Railway Show season is starting in Donegal Town and will make a welcome relief from the overload of politics. Donegal Railway Heritage Centre is holding its first model railway exhibition of the year from Saturday, May 24 through to Monday, May from 12 noon to 5pm each day.

There will be working scale models of the old County Donegal Railway stations at Letterkenny and Donegal Town, each assembled in different coaches from the original Donegal rolling stock.

There will be an OO gauge layout in the original passenger trailer No 5. There will also be working displays of old Hornby O Gauge tinplate trains in both electric and clockwork, some of these being up to 90 years old.

There will also be a Meccano and Dinky Toy display and films of the old railways of the County when they were running. Weather permitting, there will be train rides for children on a miniature railway and the garden railway will be in operation.

Book Launch

County Donegal Railway Restoration Ltd will be holding its AGM in the McGowan Room, one of the railcar trailers on the railway, at the Donegal Railway Heritage Centre on Saturday, May 24 at 2pm.

At the end of the AGM, around 3pm, there will be a book launch open to the public – this will be a revised and updated edition of the key reference work on the County Donegal Railway and one of the co-authors will be present to sign copies.

This should make excellent reading for anyone with any interest in the story of the railways around Donegal or those who remember the railway and any elderly relatives.

Railway Situation Vacant

County Donegal Railway Restoration Ltd needs staff to assist the Donegal Railway Heritage Centre in developing and maintaining its buildings and displays and in increasing its revenue.

The work involves a variety of fund-raising and sales tasks, assisting at shows, document design and other computer tasks, and basic maintenance of the displays in running order, plus some housekeeping of these to ensure the museum is kept impressive for visitors, and displays are refreshed and changed.

As the wages are funded through Pobal preference will be given to those currently on the unemployment list, recently laid off or who have special needs. Send CV or hand in at the address below. Excellent references needed. Closing date May 26.
