Donegal’s “Winning Streak” continued at the weekend when two locals won a total of €78,000 on the Saturday night gameshow.
Joe Birney from Ramelton picked up a cool €33,000 on the National Lottery show, as well as a holiday to the Greek islands. Joe had bought his ticket at Spar in the town. Joe, who has been married to his wife Elizabeth for 22 years and has two children – Christopher and Rebecca – works for Eircom in Letterkenny.
Daughter Rebecca bought the scratch card, but Joe was the only one of the family willing to appear on TV.Joe, who is chairman of the Ramelton Tidy Towns committee and a member of the local Pantomime Society, was at the tallies for the elections last Saturday when he got a phone call from a friend telling him the wonderful news.
He said he would like to visit the US with Elizabeth to visit his brother and sister.
Greencastle woman Marina Burns also appeared on the RTE programme at the weekend. Marina, who bought her ticket at the Post Office in Moville, won a total of €45,000, including a car.
Marina, who is retired, said she was making a cup of tea while watching last week’s Winning Streak when she heard her name read out and was in total shock! Marina is a member of the Irish Country Women’s Association and is very interested in craft work. She enjoys working with wood, knitting and cross stitch, and likes to read.
She said this was the first time she’d won anything big, and plans to use her winnings to have double glazing installed in her house.
