5th and 6th class girls from Cloughfin National School, Ballindrait, Lifford have been crowned All-Ireland Mathletes Champs of 2014!

It’s been a hectic few months for Cloughfin National School, not only were they shortlisted to the final seven schools in the Eircom Junior Spider Awards for Best School Website in Google HQ, but they were also setting the pace in the national competition Mathletes Challenge 2014.

The 5th and 6th class girls embraced the challenge from the onset on February 1st right through until the end of the challenge on May 16th.

They spent hours in school discussing the mathematical problems encountered, and many more hours at home working online trying to master topics.

Each pupil received points for topics mastered and leader boards were posted every Friday on http://Mathletes.ie. They were exhilarated to learn that they were topping the polls nationwide each week, and a visit from Donegal TD Joe McHugh, who presented them with their national trophies for February and March, made them even more determined to excel.

Principal Fiona Farry said: “It was a fantastic initiative – pupils logged on as soon they got to school, long before the 9.20 bell rang. They spent so many hours doing maths at home – even during the weekends and holidays!

“There was fantastic support from all other pupils and from Mr. Campbell’s Junior Room pupils. The personal video from Sean O’Sullivan – founder of Mathletes Challenge – was quite amazing. ()

“The Mathletes Champs 2014 will be a title to defend next year!”

This two teacher school in Cloughfin, nestled amongst Ballindrait, Castlefinn, Convoy and Raphoe went on to win the Competition, and prizes of trophies, Ipad, Itunes voucher, and a cheque to purchase more technology for the school were awarded by Sean O’Sullivan.

Pupils received an amazing homecoming from their parents and the wider community at 9.00pm last Saturday!
