Gabrielle was invited along to the Clanree hotel on Tuesday night by Brian Higgins from ABC School Supplies to meet Sara Wernham, co-author and creator of the hugely successful Jolly Phonics teaching programme.

It was a very enjoyable evening. Brian and his team also run the very successful Babyzone and Kidszone Educational toys down in the retail park across from the new Dunnes.

Many of the local primary schools were represented with some familiar faces from the teaching profession there along with parents to find out more about Jolly Phonics. Sara told said it's an enjoyable, multi-sensory program that introduces all the letter sounds, with an action, song, and storyline for each of the 42 sounds of English and is taught in over 90% of Irish schools from Junior Infants level and promises to teach children how to read and write twice as quickly as any other reading programme.

Local school teacher Denise Higgins, Brian's wife, also launched her second primary school book "Just Cursive Handwriting for Senior Infants" a follow on to the junior infant’s book that she launched last year.

The idea behind the Just Cursive Handwriting programme is simple– frequent, focussed practice of a skill leads to mastery and retention of that skill. Teaching fully cursive handwriting from Infant level will enable children to write fluently, quickly and clearly.

It's good to know that ABC School supplies and Denise are keeping education to the fore and building on the services and resources available to schools and parents in the North West.
