The Irish Wheelchair Association – providing essential services to people with disabilities.

The Irish Wheelchair Association  (IWA) is a voluntary organisation which has been working with and on behalf of people with disabilities since it was formed in 1960.

Local Resource Centres in your community

In Donegal we have services in Letterkenny , Carrigart, Malin , Dobhar and Donegal Town.We have recently relocated to our new  premises at Glenview, Upper Carnamggagh which offers the opportunity to grow on our already busy centre.People with disabilities attending any of the centres can avail of activities jointly planned with the individual and trained staff. The Centres are open to those with a physical and /or sensory disability  and for many it is an enjoyable day out with an opportunity to meet others in similar situations .A vital point to note is that it is not necessary to be a wheelchair user to engage in services with IWA.

IWA have limited accessible transport used to transport individuals to the centres as well as those who arrive independently or avail of community/family transport.

In Letterkenny we have a vibrant group of young adults who engage in all aspects of community life such as cinema, bowling, dining out, etc with the support of IWA staff and transport.

Assisted Living Services

Another key service in Donegal is the Assisted Living Services.Within this service IWA  provides individuals Personal Assistants to support them in their daily lives.the Assisted Living Service is delivered by highly trained staff throughout Donegal.

School of Motoring

IWA offers a wide range of Motoring services that support people in gaining increased independence and mobility. In Donegal, IWA have a dedicated driving school car and our experienced professional driving instructors provide tuition to drivers with a drivers range of conditions and or disabilities. The service is aimed at those who wish to learn to drive or return to driving after a period of absence.

Volunteering with IWA

IWA was founded by volunteers and to this day they support and sustain the Organisation and our members.Volunteers may be involved in assisting in the centres, shop (located on Port Road Letterkenny and provides vital income to support services), or indeed in fundraising efforts such as our annual Church Gate Collections or Angel  Campaign.
