A Letterkenny-based personal trainer is heading off to Denmark this weekend to compete in a high-profile World Beauty Fitness and Fashion (WBFF) Show.

Lisa McDevitt (24) will be up against around 60 competitors when she takes to the stage in the Bikini Diva category.

The top three will be given “pro-status” and will get to the world championships in Las Vegas in August. Competitors are judged upon their overall beauty and body shape and tone. This competition consists of two rounds, bikini round and evening gown round.

The WBFF shows feature some of the most glamorous and fit models in the world, linking in with the fitness, beauty, fashion, competitive sport, health, and wellness industries.

Originally from Fintown, Lisa’s interest in bodybuilding began last autumn when she was encouraged by Noel Smyth to take part in the Northern Ireland’s World Amateur Body Building Association Fitness and Bodybuilding Championships.

“I loved the environment and the passionate people, being on stage, and the buzz. Everyone was so genuinley nice,” she says.

Bitten by the bug, she set her sights on the Danish event.

She went to preformance nutritionalist and trainer Mark Doherty who took her under his wing and got her diet back on track and helped her with a new training programme. She had put on two stone doing a cross-fit regime.

Since February she has really stepped up the training, going up to six days a week to the Raw Muscle gym in Derry. She also attends strongman training in Derry.  She has been “working very hard” to get into shape and is disciplined when it comes to food, eating a lot of chicken, salmon, cod and steak, and vegetables. Sweet potatoes, rice, avacado, nuts and almond butter all feature as well, with portions being weighed. She also uses supplements, which aid recovery as well.

Meanwhile, busy Lisa has also been developing a growing business as a bootcamp coach and personal trainer – with up to four classes a day, six days a week (with the first class at 6.00 am!).

She coaches only women and says its great to see how people can progress and change, how they can become healthier and fitter. “I empower them to be more confident and to discover themselves,” she notes. Indeed, it is hugely satisfying to be helping others and assisting them in changing their mindsets and believing in themselves.

Last month she got a bug and a bout of ‘flu which threatened to ruin her plans and she had to take time off.  But Doherty, and her boyfriend Ruairi Stewart (also from Derry) kept her going. Ruairi is competing in the Fitness Model and Muscle Model categories.

Lisa has just opened a new studio on the Cullion Road in Letterkenny. She will be back from Denmark on Sunday at 8.00 pm – and will be back on bootcamp duties at 6.00 am on Monday morning!
