Olympic gold medal winning boxing Michael Carruth certainly likes coming to Donegal.

Last week he was in Raphoe where the local boxing club held a special tournament against Carruth's Drimnagh Boxing Club as part of the Donegal club's 30 anniversary celebrations.

And how he is making plans to come back for a Malin Head to Mizen Head charity cycle.

With Ireland having the highest rates of cystic fibrosis in the world and some of the most severe types of the disease—over 1,300 people are living with cystic fibrosis here currently—Cystic Fibrosis Ireland (CFI) has launched their Malin2Mizen Cycle4CF 2019 which takes place on Thursday May 9th - Sunday May 12th (www.cfireland.ie).

The aim is to raise awareness and funds to help provide support and services for people with cystic fibrosis nationally. These include support grants for people with cystic fibrosis for exercise, transplant assessment, fertility treatment and counselling, as well as research and new healthcare facilities including a much required dedicated CF Unit at Beaumont Hospital.

The 2018 Malin2Mizen Cycle4CF was held in memory of Lisa Dolan from Athlone who sadly passed away in May 2017.

Lisa had cystic fibrosis and received a double lung transplant in 2016. It was a fitting tribute to Lisa that the 2018 cycle was held in her memory, as she encouraged people to sign up and take part in the Malin2Mizen Cycle4CF 2017. Lisa’s parents Seán and Rosie Dolan completed the 600+ km cycle from Malin to Mizen in May of this year. They got huge support in the Athlone area for their fundraising with the Malin2Mizen Cycle4CF 2018 raised an amazing €141,638.61.

Michael Carruth had thrown his weight behind the Malin2Mizen Cycle4CF 2019.

Having come on board as an ambassador for the 2018 cycle, Michael has gone one step further for next year and signed up for the cycle in May.

The four day cycle starts in Malin Head, County Donegal and finishes in Mizen Head, County Cork.

  • Thursday 9th May: Malin Head to Bundoran (147km)
  • Friday 10th May: Bundoran to Oranmore (172km)
  • Saturday 11th May: Oranmore to Mallow (152km)
  • Sunday 12th May: Mallow to Mizen Head (140km)
